Netherlands claims bicycle capital of the world

The Netherlands has claimed to be the bicycle capital of the world with 40 percent of all traffic movements by bicycle, according to news reaching here from Amsterdam.
A report from the Dutch Daily News said the city has created a bicycle friendly environment promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle for its residents.
According to preliminary figures, last year over 1.3 million bicycles were sold in the Netherlands which created a revenue of 950 million euros, an increase of 4 percent from 2008.
The report said that the average spending on bicycle last year increased 3.5 percent to the average of 713 euros from 683 euros in 2008.
The electric bike sales increased by 30 percent in 2009 reaching over 150 thousand e-bikes. The electric bike enjoys a 10 percent market share.
In the past ten years, the total number of bikes in the Netherlands has reached 18 million sets among a population of 16.5 million.
